When faced with the prospect of hearing a solo banjo album, you might wish you were in an American controlled Iraqi prison instead. Oh, not so with this one banjo-boy! Richie Stearns- Horseflies banjo player, National champion... not your ordinary banjo disc. Vocal tunes, quieter tones, etc. No crazy blazin' pickin'. Richie shows exquisite taste and restraint with all the numbers here. Like in jazz, sometimes it's the note you don't play that makes the piece. Great disc. A real nice listen.

5 Stars Review of RICHIE STEARNS
by Jonathan Zisk from danby on Dec 2, 2008
Feels like a lot of people you've known a long time& like pete seeger and john prine. Like Gillian welch and woody Guthrie. But the hank williams voice is more inured and less a plaintive wail... And the neil young afterthegoldrush riffs are so drawn out they out-ache 1970 in spades. Richie's echo of jessie colin young's darknessdarkness that will haunt your visceral memory. THIS IS NOT DERIVATIVES OF OF ALL OUR FAV'S GANG. REAL DEAL HERE! The drone has a middle-eastern ring, redolent of poppies and warm afternoons. The middle register eats away at your spine, wafting and pulling your body's ears to the sunlight. Even in the minor key moods and downbeat laden reel-turned-ballad tempos you cant help but smile. I'm a drummer, and I sat down with brushes whispering out a counterpoint to this infectious succor. Mmm hmm.
